Buddhism คือ ศาสนาพุทธ ส่วนผู้ที่นับถือศาสนาพุทธ หรือพุทธศาสนิกชนเรียกว่า Buddhist ดังนั้นเมื่อถูกถามว่านับถือศาสนาอะไร ควรตอบด้วย Buddhist
บุคคลในพุทธศาสนา
สมเด็จพระสัมมาสัมพุทธเจ้า = The Lord Buddha
พระสงฆ์ = Monk
เจ้าอาวาส = The abbot
สามเณร = Novice
พุทธศาสนิกชน = Buddhist
เด็กวัด = Temple boy
พระรัตนตรัย (Triple Gem/Rattana Tri)
Rattana (แก้ว) = Gem (อัญมณี, รัตนชาติ)
Triple = Tri หมายถึง สาม
พระรัตนตรัย คือ แก้วอันประเสริฐสุดของพุทธศาสนิกชน 3 ประการ ได้แก่
The Buddha = พระพุทธ (Buddha Gem พุทธรัตนะ)
The Dhamma = พระธรรม (Dhamma Gem ธรรมรัตนะ)
The Sangha = พระสงฆ์ (Sangha Gem สังฆรัตนะ)
หลักคำสอนทางพระพุทธศาสนา
ศีล = Precept
ศีล 5 = Five Precepts
ศีล 5 เป็นศีลขั้นพื้นฐานที่พระพุทธเจ้าทรงสั่งสอนให้ชาวพุทธทุกคนยึดถือปฏิบัติเป็นหลักของชีวิต เราสามารถชวนเพื่อนต่างชาติอาราธนาศีล 5 ด้วยกัน ได้ว่า
1. To abstain from taking life. (ปาณาติปาตา เวรมณี สิกขาปทังสมาทิยามิ) หรือ Do not kill = ห้ามฆ่าสัตว์ตัดชีวิต
2. To abstain from taking what is not given or stealing. (อทินนาทานา เวรมณี สิกขาปทังสมาทิยามิ) หรือ Do not steal = ห้ามลักขโมย
3. To abstain from sexual misconduct. (กาเมสุมิจฉาจารา เวรมณี สิกขาปทังสมาทิยามิ) หรือ Do not indulge a sexual misconduct = ห้ามประพฤตผิดในกาม
4. To abstain from false speech. (มุสาวาทา เวรมณี สิกขาปทังสมาทิยามิ) หรือ Do not lie = ห้ามโกหก
5. To abstain from intoxicants or harmful substances. (สุราเมรยมัชชปมาทัฏฐานา เวรมณี สิกขาปทังสมาทิยามิ) หรือ Do not drink alcohol = ห้ามดื่มของมึนเมา
ศีล 8 = Eight Precepts
อริยสัจ 4 = Four Noble Truths
มรรค 8 = Eightfold Path
โอวาทปาฏิโมกข์ = The principle teaching
กฎแห่งกรรม = Law of Karma

กิจกรรมในพุทธศาสนา
พิธีทางศาสนา = Religious Ceremony
กราบพระ = Pay respect to (the monk/the Buddha image)
ไหว้พระ = Worship Buddha image
พระสวดมนต์ = Chant
สวดมนต์ = Pray
ฟังเทศน์ = Listen to the sermon
รับพรจากพระ = Receive blessing from the monks
กัณฑ์เทศน์ = Offerings for a sermon

เวียนเทียน = The candlelight procession
นิมนต์พระ = Invite the monk
จุดธูป = Light the incense sticks
จุดเทียน = Light the candle
บริจาค = Donate

บาตรพระ = Alms bowl
ดอกบัว = Lotus flower
เครื่องสังฆทาน = Offering
ธูป = Incense stick
เทียน = Candle
กระถางธูป = Incense burner
สายสิญจน์ = Sacred cord
น้ำมนต์ = Holy water
จีวร = The yellow robe (of a Buddhist monk/novice)
ผ้าอาบน้ำฝน = Cloth for the rains/Rains cloth
เทียนพรรษา = Lent candle
ทั้งนี้ ในวันพระ หรือวันสำคัญทางศาสนาพุทธ หากอยากจะชวนเพื่อนต่างชาติไปวัดด้วยกันก็ถามไปเลยว่า “Do you want to go to the temple and make merit with me? (คุณอยากไปวัดและทำบุญกับฉันไหม?)
